VA Tech Shootings, Aftermath, and Afterthoughts

Filed under: General — chaser @ 10:17 am

I had been thinking about writing this post for a while now, but I wanted to wait a bit. My bro just sent me this article and it pretty much hits what I wanted to talk about.

I want to write, not about the actual shootings, but the feelings of every Asian-American not directly involved in the shootings. During the day I had been following the story on my Netvibes feeds. Later on in the afternoon my coworker said that the shooter was Asian…Asian. I’m not embarrassed to say that it shocked me and took a sec to settle in. I’m not really sure why it was so surprising, later on that day my dad said one thing that pretty much cleared it all up.

I heard it was an Asian. I hope it’s not a Chinese, it would be bad for us.

That got me thinking…after it was released that the shooter was Korean the Korean community immediately responded. From all this I realized two things.

1. Asians all around the world were thinking I hope it’s not MY people
2. Minorities always have fear of a recoil from the public after an incident like this…however it doesn’t seem to be the same the other way around

Personally, I’m glad that there wasn’t any retaliation against the Korean community. I hope that in the future we can completely that remove fear of retaliation.
